The Waterways and Attractions of Xochimilco

Xochimilco holds roughly 170 to 184 kilometers of navigable canals. These waterways contain Aztec farming islands, animal sanctuaries, and unique landmarks.

When your trajinera leaves the pier, you enter the remnants of a lake system that once covered the Valley of Mexico. The canals operate as a floating marketplace where vendors pull alongside to sell food, drinks, and mariachi songs.

You control where the boat goes. Most short trips stay on the main channels, while longer rentals can reach specialized ecological locations.

These man-made islands form an ancient Aztec agricultural system. Locals still use them to grow flowers, vegetables, and plants. You will see greenhouses lining the banks as you float past. Ask your boat driver to pull over so you can buy fresh flowers.
